Camping at Refuges
Hey,
I am going to Corsica to do the GR 20 around the end of June, start of July and taking a tent to camp at the refuges en route. I realise to stay in the refuges, booking is necessary but is this also so for camping, or is it possible to just turn up and camp (obviously paying the fees)?
Many thanks in advance,

Andrew-
You don't need to make reservations for a tent, it's first come first served. As soon as you get to each refuge, grab the best site you can find and then go pay the guardian. The earlier you arrive at a refuge, the better site you'll find, but there's always somewhere you can pitch a tent. One exception might be Col de Vergio, which has limited tent sites. There are ways to combine stages so you miss this stop if you want to.
Have a great time,
Mark
(I'll also on the GR20 late June/early July this year)

Mark,
Thanks a lot for the speedy response! Heading back to the GR20 for the second time? I'm only doing the northern half in a more relaxed fashion but am debating whether to do it the traditional North to South, or South to North as I have heard that the days are generally shorter for the Northern half if done in reverse. Any advice?
Cheers again,
Andrew

Andrew-
Going North to South, if you are in decent fitness (and I don't mean you have to be super-fit) you'll find the days aren't too long. There is plenty of time to stop along the path and enjoy the scenery, sun, or whatever, and still have hours to spend at the refuge while the sun is still high (of course that also depends on where you stop each night, since there are choices on many stages). Same goes for South to North. I haven't gone S-N so I can't comment on it's relative ease. Going N-S you'll generally be with the same group of people at each refuge. This can be good or bad, depending on your preference. Since fewer people go S-N you might see only a few familiar faces each evening.
