Hot meals available at Refuges?
Hi Marek
Thank you for your prompt reply to my previous questions.
In addition, as you seem to be the only reliable resource I can find I'll ask you another question.
I have the FFRP Topoguide on the GR 20 and it is very helpful but a bit vague on availability of meals at refuges. I see that most refuges have 'petit ravitaillement', for buying snacks and food to nibble on. But then in other parts of the guide it says for example at Refuge d'Ortu di u Piobbu 'petite restauration'.
Does 'petite restauration' mean they provide simple hot meals, or just equipment to cook your own food on!?
This is importat to know as it influences drastically how many meals I should carry. Is there a hot meal available at the refuges? Simple question but nobody seams to be able to give me a decent answer.
Thanking you again in advance
Jim

Jim-
You'll be able to get meals at each stage. At the refuges this usually means pasta, bread, and soup (or white beans in broth at Manganu). In the morning you can get a hot drink with bread and jam, perhaps an omelette or charcuterie. Food at the bergeries spans a broader range, and depends on the owners. At some you will get meat stew, bread, pasta, etc., while others might have snacks but no hot meals (they are in the middle of a stage). There are also hotels at some stages that serve larger meals, and some days you have more than one option where to stay and eat.
So you should be able to get a hot dinner and something for breakfast at each stage, but be warned that the refuges and bergeries don't have unlimited food supplies. If you arrive late at a stage there's a chance you won't get the standard meal, but the guardians do their best to find something to offer you.
That's been my experience, but I'm no authority on the matter.
Mark.

Mari, the guardian, has moved from Prati to d'Ortu di u Piobbu. She's brilliant. I'm sure you'll get food, but then it's stage one for those starting in the North so you really could carry your own.
I can usually get the guardian's food no problem but would not advise arriving late and make sure you book the food as soon as you arrive (the list does close). Meals are usually between 19:00 and 20:00. I carry three evening meals just in case though and because the food can be poor. There are also places on route in addition to the huts at Asco, Col de Verde, Col de Vergio, and Vizzazona. 20 years ago, food was an issue but not now (at a price). But always have some backup in case.
