If you're fit & want to get the hardest part over with, go from North to South. The first four days are a baptism of fire!
If you're a little unfit, it's better to start in the South & head north. You'll be much fitter when you hit the hard stuff. But don't be fooled: it'll still hurt!
I went North to South simply because my ferry arrived at Ile Rousse and I knew what it cost to get to Calenzana by taxi (25 Euros, but I went to Calvi first on the train). If you go South to North you might want to think about how you are going to get to Conca.

If you go south to north, do not be fooled as it gets very tought in the North. But also don't give up too soon (e.g. day 1) as it will ease you in better. Start day 1 very early to stay out of the sun. I'm just back and more people seemed to do south to north than previous years (yes, it's an annual event for me!).
