Fuel types available for stoves

Another quick query: What fuel types are available en route? Are the resealable type of gas cartridges generally available and where? Or only the piercable types as I've seen indicated in some places? Alternatively, I assume meths (or alcohol a bruler) is available at some refuges and at least at Calenzana and Vissavona?

I'm inclined to go with an alcohol burning stove (the Vargo Decagon) but if resealable gas cartridges are available (again, at least at Calenzana and Vissavona) then may go with that option for convenience.

I'm also very confused on gas types available. From what I've read on the web. seems there are 3 types of gas cannister:

cv270 / 470 - resealable Camping Gaz using a click and screw fixture
Camping Gaz - pierceable
Coleman threaded gas - to fit most types of mountaineering stove e.g pocket rocket.

can anyone please clear up what kind it is you can buy in Calenzana / vizzanova and which are sold in the refuges?

Thanks for your help and sorry that I can't be more help!

Hi,

I have just completed the northern half of the GR20 (from vizzavona to Calezana) with our own fuel related debacles so I hope this helps.

Vizzavona had both the pierceable and coleman threaded gas cylinders available when we went through and there was a large stock of them! There were also stocks of these cylinders at Haut Asco and Hotel Castel di Vergio when we went through. Not sure what the cv270 type is I am afraid.

Alcohol a Bruler is available at most major city supermarkets (i.e. saw it in Nice and Calvi and have heard reports of it in Calenzana spar) but did not see it anywhere in the refuges etc.

I took a petrol stove and found petrol a bruler impossible to get hold of, but all petrol stations were willing to top up with some unleaded (sans plumb).

At the refuges themselves, some offer gas stoves for use when camping. To ask, a gas stove is gas rechaude with an accent on the final e. The following refuges had stoves that we used:
Refuge d'Ortu di u Piobbu
Haut Asco (full kitchen, very nice!)
Refuge de Tighjettu (didn't actually stop here but saw stoves available)
Refuge de Manganu
Refuge de l'Onda had a stove but it didn't appear to work... think they were going to fix it though (trusting on my poor french there!)

Hope this helps a bit!

Andrew

Just back this week.

Limited supplies. For example at Vizzavona, saw one cv270 click type and several of the nonsealable types.

I've stopped taking one without problem (most huts have gas).

Same about L'onda - the campsite one did not work but what did - really horrible place.

thanks for the comments guys, very helpful.

PS. the cv270 is a camping gaz fuel canister, and can be used on their stoves only- the cartridges have a little plastic ring on top. Unlike the pierceable ones, you can take the stove off and it seals itself.
