We are arriving in Bastia on 21st June by ferry from Nice and staying 1 night in Bastia. On Sunday 22nd June we need to get to Calvi / Calenzana to start the route. What is the best way? I gather there are no buses on a Sunday at this time?

Train. Check time table.

Then bus/taxi to Calenzana.

Thanks Rot - looks like the 1025 train getting off at Camp Raffalli is the best option - and then get going on the route.

Nigel

You probably won't find any taxi's at Camp Raffalli, which means you'll have a 7km walk to Calenzana. That will be hot and uncomfortable with a full pack but not a bad warm-up for the GR20, I suppose.

If you then want to start up the first stage on the same day, however, be prepared to carry at least 4 litres of water each from Calenzana. The lower slopes are incredibly hot in the afternoon sun! There might be a couple of muddy streams part way up if they haven't dried up but you'll need to filter or treat the water.

You could stay overnight in the Gite d'Etap in Calenzana and set off early the next morning.

Thanks Alan - That's really helpful. We were considering looking for a campsite in Calenzana but hadn't found one. Do you need to prebook or will we be able to just turn up and pitch?

The Calinzana camping site is at the municipal gite which is on the left as you approach the village. We on several occasions, just turned up and checked in at the office place next to the, do your own thing, kitchen and dining area. Good showers etc.
