Merrell approach/trail shoes vs Scarpa 4-season crampon-compatible boots

Hello. I am due to embark on the GR20 next week. When I walked the GR5 in Summer 2012 I wore my Scarpa's which were great for their ankle support. Given the amount of scrambling I am tempted to wear my Merrell shoes given their flexibility - the Scarpa's are so rigid.

I have done all my training scrambling in my Merrell's (Crib Goch, Sharp Edge (Blencathra)). My problem is that I have no footwear that falls in between the two. Any advice from those who have completed the GR20 in mid-summer would be appreciated. Do I need to pop to the shops before I fly to Calvi?

Thanks
Pete

Hi Pete,

Merrell approach shoes are what I hiked the GR20 in. If that's what you're used to and your ankles are strengthened by wearing hiking shoes without ankle protection, then don't think twice!

Happy hiking. I'm massively envious!
