It's happened between yesterday 23 and today 24 September (2016).
A German hiker enterd the Cirque yesterday and got lost on the way. Had to spend the whole night in place only to be rescued by the Gendarmerie today with a chopper. Luckily he didn't get hurt.
Some people will never learn ....

I have been through the Cirque a few times. What this story tells me is that it's now a completely different place. They said they were going to take out the chains and ladder, and erase the markers. When I went through, it wasn't possible to get lost because it was so well marked. Now it seems that it's easy to get lost. I won't be going there again, and in any case I like the views from the new high level route.

I agree. I don't understand why some people still want to stubbornly cross the Cirque no matter what when the new route is more interesting and even - in a way - more challenging.
