Bedbugs! And how we got rid of them

So yes...

I read about the bedbugs in the refuges and figured that it would happen to me. And, of course, by the end of the Northern section trek, my husband and I were covered in itchy bites.

After some research I discovered that adult/egg bedbugs die in extreme temperatures. So after stocking up on cortizone cream and medicated gold bond (which actually really soothed the itching) we also bought big black plastic trash bags. We threw everything we had (backpacks, sleeping bags, shoes, clothes, etc) in the bags and let them sit for as long as we could in the August heat. After a few hours we were completely bedbug free!!

I guess this won't work for every season, but hopefully some of you will benefit!

Thanks Ayala for your report. Bedbugs are a constant p.i.t.a. on the trail no matter how hard they try to get rid of them.
The question is: if you knew about them in advance, why didn't you do something to prevent or at least attenuate this issue? Carrying a tent, bedbugs repellents etc etc.
