Hello!
Does someone have an update on what the prizes are?
I read topics that say € 7 - € 10 in 2013. I can't find an update for this season.

Also, last year some gites/refugees were closed. What's the situation today?
BTW, what's the differences between al these names? Gites, refugee, bergerie, ...

Any other updates are welcome. I'm going second half of september.

Gîte [d'étape]
Accommodation for tourists, bikers, cyclists, travellers, etc.
Operated privately, by individuals or companies.
You must pay to gain access, prices are unregulated (~€2 to 2000 a night).
May be closed or fully booked at any time.
(Think of it as a hotel, minus the star-ratings and room service)

Gîte Municipal/Gîte Communal
Accommodation for tourists, bikers, cyclists, travellers, etc.
Operated by a municipality or city.
You must pay to gain access, prices are set by the city council (~€2 to 20 a night)
May be closed or fully booked at any time.
(Think of it as a minimalistic youth hostel, run by a city)

Refuge/Abri du Parc
Accommodation for hikers, mountain workers, anyone briefly in need of a shelter
Operated as a public service by natural parks, local councils, non-profits
You must pay a legal fee to gain access only when staffed, otherwise it's free
Stays open year-round, must never turn down people (night, bad weather...)
(Think of it as an old cabin-in-the-woods, but with a guardian sometimes)

Over the recent years, many private individuals (shepherds in need of money...) and companies (hotels, restaurants...) have started to make profit from the crowd of hikers, thus spreading the confusion between their private gîtes and official refuges, luring hikers into their buildings and shops (going as far as destroying the official markings to paint their own commercial "detours"). Examples of these newly added "commercial stops": Ascu-Stagnu, Vergio, Vaccaghja, Ballone, Capannelle, etc. etc.

Even though it may sound snobbish... the real, genuine, authentic GR20 experience as it was originally designed and enjoyable 50 years ago consisted of wilderness, mountains, and unstaffed refuges only. Without any "gîte" or "bergerie", without hot showers and warm meals cooked for you each night, without grocery stores and cell phone network.
