GR20 GPS Datum
Hi Marek,
We have spoken on the country walking forum regarding walking the GR20 in May (remember campers185?).
I've finally got my tent, a TNF Particle 13 @ 1.88 Kg, and I am going to use a mini Trangia instead of my big one (330 gms compared to 1.22 Kgs- Which one would you use?).
What I can't seem to find out is what is the map and datum info for using a GPS? (just in case of fog/mist) and also can you recommend a decent map of the GR20 and at what scale 25,50 or 100k?
Thanks in advance

Hi Grahame,
The lighter tent, the better. It should be windproof enough though, because Corsican mountains are really windy. On the other hand, you'll almost always find a wind-free place to rise your tent even on the highest ridges.
I did not use any GPS device in Corsica, so I can't recommend a good map for your GPS device. Regarding paper maps, Cicerone GR20 – Corsica The High Level Route by Paddy Dillon is considered one of the best guidebooks and it includes hand drawn route maps of GR20's stages. In addition I have two IGN TOP 100 maps that cover entire Corsica -- No. 73 Bastia - Corte and No. 74 Ajaccio - Bonifacio. They are good enough for general overview and all major long-distance paths including the GR20 are well marked in them, however true hiking ING TOP 25 maps would be definitely better. I also have the Czech translation of the Lonely Planet Corsica guidebook, but it isn't good for mountain hiking at all.
Hope this helps.

Hi Marek,
Sorry mate,
I have sent you another email and have just found your last reply to me. So please feel free to bin it!
Yep the TNF Particle 13 tent is probably about 90% mesh and I tried it out the UK hills and woke up to the flysheet being frozen at 2,000 feet:-(.
My bag is rated at +11 to +3 (comfort but-11 extreme!) I am using a silk liner to give me a couple of degrees more comfort. I have to to use this bag due to weight. I will be carrying all in a 50L sack wieghing in at 15Kgs without water & meths. I expect I will aslo take a small gas burner in case I can get some gas in Calvi.
Speak to ya soonly
Grahame
