We are planning on doing the northern half of the GR 20 in July, camping along the way. We heard that normal Thermarest sleeping mats are too thin for the rocky ground. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Seem to work for other people, and for me. Mind you there is always the puncture risk. My companion spent most of our trip looking for a leak. You could consider an Exped Mat:-

Got to be good for that weight and price.
Otherwise take two trees and a hammock !

I'm 6' 3" and used a 3/4 length Alpkit Airic; now replaced with a new range. Very comfortable, warm and lightweight. There will be no problem with using this on rocky ground.
