Eating!
Hi everybody!
Is it always possible to have dinner and breakfast in the refuges?
We are doing the GR20 at the end of July, we plan to sleep in the tent but we would like to save weight and do not carry the mini-stove, gas, pots and so on.
Is it reasonable to find place to eat or in this period they will be too crowded even for eating?
Thank you a lot!
A.

Hi Piz,
It's always possible but it's expensive. Dinner typically 16-18 euros, breakfast 10, beer 5, 100gms of chocolate 2.5. If you're always eating in the refuges you'd better like pasta/lentils as thats all thats on offer. If you're camping you can't use the cookers inside the refuges but there are seperate gas rings outside, you'll need all your own utensils though. As for how busy they'll be at the end of July I don't know, but I'd guess very. I was on my own and I had a pot, mug and spoon with me together with a Pocket Rocket stove with an adapter for Blu Gaz cannisters I also carried several freeze dried meals and everything got used. I'd view dinner as a social event not just a meal it's a chance to get to know your fellow travellers and enjoy a glass or two of vino (cheeper than beer) I mixed and matched having some meals in refuges and doing my own thing for others. Also take plenty of euros as nothing on the GR20 is cheap! Enjoy the adventure, I certainly did (my rucksack was heavy but my heart was light!)

The problem with refuge breakfasts is that they may delay your start in the morning. I used to have a hut dinner but do my own breakfast which consisted of a cup of tea plus anything else I found in my sack eg biscuits, choirzo, bread, cheese etc. Hot meals may be expensive but it saves slugging around food. The only food I carried was tea/coffee/packets of soup/couscous. The rest I bought on route. The couscous /soup was for emergency use only. I used the supplied gas rings which eliminated the need for stove plus fuel. I prefer a light heart and a light rucksack ! And you can get way with using the hut gas rings sometimes !

I never had breakfasts at the refuges but I noticed that they are prepared in advance the night before (you need to make a reservation with the guardian) so that your breakfast tray will be available for you in the morning at whatever time you wake up. I don't know if this is a rule for every refuge. The Carrozzu definitely does this.
