WIFI or mobile along the route

I and my boyfriend are planning to hike the G20 south to north in August/september. I am trying to decide whether to take my smartphone, and use GPS or Google earth instead of paper maps. It also means I can load up with e-books and not have to carry any, or an MP3 player. But it means carrying a powermonkey too. How does GPS work? If there is no WiFi along the route, will I just have a useless piece of electronic equipment, and should I just carry a couple of books and some paper maps the old fashioned way?
